This dance by choreographed Hayat is dearly beloved by all whom I have ever known to have partaken of it.
These words are carved upon Rumiís grave. In world literature many believe there were two giants and then all the rest. Shakespeare and Rumi. Shakespeare was a master poet and a master of the dramatic form in the Dionysian tradition. Rumi (1200ís AD) who was born in Afghanistan but who lived most of his life in what is now Turkey, was a master poet and a master of the inner way, of direct knowledge. He is also called Mevlana and it is from him that the Turn and the Mevlana Dervishes originate. Much of Rumiís poetry, in fact, was created as he was facilitating (guiding) a night of meditative movement ... perhaps the Turn ... perhaps a form of zikr (see glossary). As the quality of the state of the circle (and of Rumi) deepened, he would break into these ëpoemsí both describing the indescribable and enticing those present (the lovers) deeper into the state.
My own life and work (meaning me, Shaker) has been deeply affected by Rumi in many ways. I first was attracted to his work in my late teens. It was not until my late twenties, however, that I discovered remnants of his way were still in existence. I was present when the first turn was performed in public in America. Yakzan Valdez, the person who gave me the most gifts in this way of the Inner dance, was made a sheik in the Mevlana Order by Sulaman Dedi, who was the one who, by tradition, wore Rumiís cloak and who came from Turkey (as an old man) to meet Yakzan and to bestow upon him the baraka of Sheik in the Mevlana Order of Sufiís.
(see the glossary and the accompanying stories for more on the matter)
Words in English
Come, Come, Whoever you are
Our is not a caravan of dispair
Come, Come, Whoever you are
This caravan has no dispair.
Even though you have broken your vow
perhaps ten thousand times
Yet come again, come again, whoevr you are
whoever you are, come
Wander, worshipper, lover of leaving, come
Wander, worshipper, lover of leaving, come
