Notes
The folks at Dancing Circles, England, where a number of these
notes originated, describe the nature of this dance quite beautifully:
ìSymbolically, it belongs loosely with a whole family of Greek
Dances (including Syrtos, Kalamatianos, etc.) which are based on a pattern
of twelve steps (breaking down into four groups of three). One of the central
concepts in Sacred Circle Dance is that the turning circle of dancers reflects
the turning of the year, the cycle of the seasons, the movement of the
heavens. A cycle of twelve steps thus emphasizes this heavenly reflection,
suggesting signs of the zodiac and embracing the four elements and directions.
It is not our suggestion that the dance was created consciously with this
in mind, but rather that these profound patterns have a way of manifesting
themselves over and over again, even in new variations of the old dances.
