Notes
Bernard considered this to be one of the pinnacle dances of his
repertoire.
while the dance steps trace infinity upon the floor, the hands
gesture upwards, inviting spirit.
In the simplest version of The String of Pearls, the one perhaps
most applicable in Dance Therapy sessions, the hands are joined in
a V hold and the circle always faces inward.
In a more involved version of The String of Pearls the arms continually
flow fully upward (at the Right Point Step) and fully downward (at the
Left Point Step), the motion, like a river, fluid and never pausing in
the flow.
The hands may be either joined or not held at all.
Head movement also may enter into the dance
flowing from facing slightly right (at the Right Point Step)
to facing slightly left (at the Left Point Step), again fluid and
unpausing.
If the hands are joined and the arm movements are being experienced
in the dance, one variation would be to allow the arms to flow only upwards
as far as shoulder height. This may be more appropriate movement for a
joined circle and introduces a more full wavelike experience.
