The Botanica
Over fifteen years ago when browsing through a used book shop, I found a collection of nearly one thousand original negatives of the botanica of Cape Anne, Masachusetts. These are the old pre-thirties nitro-glycerin based negatives.
What they represent is the life work of a
woman who had a love of the wild plants and a delicate eye and talent for
capturing the beauty and form of these plants with exquisite
taste.
I purchased the collection for pennies
and have carried them with me all these years in search of a way to honor this
woman's gift.
The old nitro negatives are highly volatile and not only may decompose quickly, they may actually burst into flame under the correct (or, as it may be, incorrect) conditions.
Little by little I am attempting with transparency scanning to capture the delicacy of this woman's work before the negatives are decomposed.
On this page, in the near future, I shall be presenting her work as time and funds allow.
